Technology

Web-casting is described as the ability to use the Web to deliver live or delayed versions of sound or video broadcasts (searchnetwork, n.d.).  Webcasting is one method that allows students the ability to enroll in real-time discusstions with each other and the presenter of the lecture from any computer that plays sound (Jones, Maramba, Boulos, Alexander, 2009).

Introduction

There are many forms of technology used today in nursing schools and can be used for educating patients on many topics such as disease and processes, medications, even care after hospitalization by using handouts, charts, videos, and even looking up their own records online.  Some of the technology forms used by nursing education are web-casting, wireless communications, real-time location systems, delivery robots, workflow management systems, wireless patient monitoring, electronic medication administration with bar coding, electronic clinical documentation with clinical decision support, and interactive patient systems (Turisco & Rhodes, 2008).  This blog is going to cover one of those mentioned tools, the webcasting.  The purpose is to describe what webcasting is, the significance including how webcasting can effect nursing and patient education, rationales, examples of advantages and disadvantages to the technology and,  finally, how it measures up to appropriate professional standards and competencies.
